Packet Video 2018 Best Paper Award Candidates:
It is our pleasure to welcome you to ACM PV 2018, the 23rd Packet Video Workshop, co-located with ACM MMSys 2018 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The Packet Video Workshop series is devoted to presenting technological advancements and innovations in video and multimedia transmission over packet networks. The workshop provides a unique venue for people from the media coding and networking fields to meet, interact and exchange ideas. Its charter is to promote the research and development in both established and emerging areas of video streaming and multimedia networking.
The workshop is a single-track event and includes paper submissions from both cutting-edge research as well as business and consumer applications. It specifically targets papers in all areas of media delivery over current Internet Protocol (IP) and future networks. Authors are especially encouraged to submit papers with real-world experimental results and datasets.
This year’s edition of Packet Video [program] comprises three technical sessions related to new media applications, content coding, and media streaming. We are happy having Jason Burgess (Comcast) at Packet Video to give a keynote about Simultaneous Migration of Codecs, Formats and DRM. Finally, we invite everyone joining the PV 2018 happy hour (“borrel”) sponsored by DASH-IF and participate in an interactive, moderated discussion, where we will discuss key topics and questions related to Packet Video and HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS).
We sincerely hope that the carefully crafted technical program, social events, scientific discussions, and your other activities in Amsterdam and its surroundings will make your ACM PV 2018 participation worthwhile and a memorable experience.

ACM TOMM: A number of outstanding accepted papers will be selected from the ACM MMSys research track, 5 special sessions and 4 workshops to submit extended versions of their work (min 30% new material). These papers will be from a wide range of topics of existing and future directions of Multimedia Systems related research. Authors of selected papers will receive invitation to extend and submit a manuscript for this special issue.
International Journal of Network Management: Outstanding and topical papers submitted to the workshop will be considered for inclusion in this special issue. Select authors will be explicitly invited to produce an extended version of their work conforming to the submission guidelines.

Simultaneous Migration of Codecs, Formats and DRM

Abstract: Over the operational life of a large video service, codecs, formats, and digital rights management may all have to be changed to support different business needs, devices, or other technological advances. Adding or changing any one of these facets is a significant change for any service. Making changes to all three simultaneously while maintaining an uninterrupted service would seem to require feats of engineering heroics. We will explore how Comcast’s addition of HEVC, migration from HLS to DASH, and swapping of digital rights management solutions impacted its IP Video platform: what changes were needed to the architecture, and how we managed the transition of users across technologies.
Bio: Jason is the lead architect for strategic initiatives within Comcast’s VIPER (Video IP Engineering & Research) group. He has an extensive background in software and systems architecture as well as application development and systems administration. He joined Comcast 7 years ago and has lead design and development of many components of Comcast’s IP video solution. He is currently leading efforts to optimize and simplify Comcast’s IP video pipeline and prepare Comcast for the next decade of video delivery. His passion for innovation has led to multiple patent awards and filings in IP video.

Winners are chosen by a DASH Industry Forum appointed committee and results are final. If papers of sufficient quality are not received, then some or all of the awards may not be granted. The competition is open to any individual, commercial or academic institution. No preference is given to DASH-IF members and membership is not required in order to participate in the competition.
